Changes in Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks in Long-Term Experiments in Southern Brazil Simulated with Century 4.5 Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Weber,Mirla Andrade; Mielniczuk,João; Tornquist,Carlos Gustavo.
ABSTRACT The Century model has successfully simulated soil organic matter dynamics in many agroecosystems. However, initial applications in southern Brazil produced mixed results. The objective of this study was to calibrate and validate Century 4.5 to simulate soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics under diverse soil management practices in subtropical Brazil. Soil C and N data from two long-term experiments established on a degraded Acrisol in the early 1980s were used. Treatments were conventional or no-tillage; grass or grass/legume cropping systems; and corn with or without mineral N fertilizer. The calibration process iteratively modified model parameters to match simulated values of C additions and Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and Soil Organic...

Dírect sowing of onion (Allium cepa) over cover crops with dífferent lengths of the chemícal fallow Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Volpi Alvez,Jorge Gualberto; Olivet Martínez,Juan José; Rodrigues da Cunha,Joao Paulo.
Abstract The objective of this work was to evalúate the effect of cover crops and fallow duration on the onion crop planted in direct sowing in trials carried out for three years. In the year 2013, two field trials were carried out in two sites. Two cover crops (oats and millet) and one uncovered control were evaluated at three planting dates. The studied variables were crop establishment and dry matter of the cover. In the field trials performed in 2014 and 2015 the effect of the length of the chemical fallow of oats on the establishment of onion was evaluated. The effect of the duration of the chemical fallow of oats was also evaluated in laboratory in 2015 in Petri dishes. In 2013, the greatest establishment was obtained in the treatments without cover...

Effects of early compost application on no-till organic soybean Planta Daninha
Penha,L.A.O.; Khatounian,C.A.; Fonseca,I.C.B.
Weed control has always been an important issue in agriculture. With the advent of no-till systems, soil erosion was reduced but herbicide use was increased. Organic no-till systems try to adjust reduced erosion to the no use of herbicides. Nevertheless, this adjustment is limited by the cost of mechanical weed control. This cost may be reduced by improved cultural weed control with cover crops mulches. In this paper we report a study on the application of compost manure on an oats winter cover crop, preceding soybean, instead of on the soybean summer crop. Treatments comprised a control without compost manure, and compost manure doses of 4 and 8 Mg ha-1 applied either on oats in winter or soybean in summer, organized in a randomized block design, with...

Effects of soil water depletion on the water relations in tropical kudzu PAB
Pereira-Netto,Adaucto Bellarmino de; Magalhães,Antonio Celso Novaes de; Pinto,Hilton Silveira.
Tropical kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides (Roxb.) Benth., Leguminosae: Faboideae) is native to the humid Southeastern Asia. Tropical kudzu has potential as a cover crop in regions subjected to dryness. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of soil water depletion on leaflet relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (g) and temperature (T L) in tropical kudzu. RWC of waterstressed plants dropped from 96 to 78%, following a reduction in SWC from 0.25 to 0.17 g (H2O).g (dry soil)-1.Stomatal conductance of stressed plants decreased from 221 to 98 mmol.m-2.s-1, following the reduction in soil water content (SWC). The day after re-irrigation, g of water stressed plants was 15% lower than g of unstressed plants. Differences in T L between...

Evaluation of crisphead lettuce cultivars in different cover types by manova and discriminant analysis Horticultura Brasileira
Oliveira,Izabela Regina C de; Rezende,Marcelo T; Dias,Carlos Tadeu dos S; Gomes,Daniela de S; Botrel,Élberis P; Gomes,Luiz Antônio A.
In many agricultural experiments the variables are biologically correlated and it is inappropriate to study them only under univariate analysis. Therefore, we evaluated commercial characteristics of crisphead lettuce cultivars and covers under a multivariate approach, using canonical discriminant analysis. We used a split plot design and we tested the cover crop, cultivar and interaction effects by using MANOVA (α= 5%). Means and its standard errors were obtained for average total weight, weight of the head, volume and density of plants. Canonical discriminant analyses were performed using PROC CANDISC procedure in SAS (SAS Institute, 2008) system. Canonical plots were obtained using JMP 9.0 (SAS Institute, 2010) linked to SAS database. With these plots it...

Fertilization and cover crop effects on soil nitrogen and plant nutrition in a young guarana plantation Acta Amazonica
Trujillo,Lucerina; Lehmann,Johannes; Cravo,Manoel da Silva; Atroch,André Luiz; Nascimento Filho,Firmino José do.
Fruit tree production is gaining an increasing importance in the central Amazon and elsewhere in the humid tropics, but very little is known about the nutrient dynamics in the soil-plant system. The present study quantified the effects of fertilization and cover cropping with a legume (Pueraria phaseoloides (Roxb.) Benth.) on soil nitrogen (N) dynamics and plant nutrition in a young guarana plantation (Paullinia cupana Kunth. (H.B. and K.) var. sorbilis (Mart.) Ducke) on a highly weathered Xanthic Ferralsol. Large subsoil nitrate (NO3-) accumulation at 0.3-3 m below the guarana plantation indicated N leaching from the topsoil. The NO3- contents to a depth of 2 m were 2.4 times greater between the trees than underneath unfertilized trees (P<0.05). The...

Inhibiton of Yellow Nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) and Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers) by a Mulch Derived from Rye (Secale cereale L.) in grapevines Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ormeño-Núñez,Juan; Pino-Rojas,Gerardo  ; Garfe-Vergara,Farouk.
Two field trials (Los Andes 1998-1999 and Santiago 2004-2005) were carried out to determine growth inhibition of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) and bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.), growing on the plantation row, by mulch derived from a rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop established between grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) rows on overhead (cv. Flame Seedless) and vertical (cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) training. Spring mowing of the rye sown in the fall allowed for developing a thick and long lasting mulch along the grape rows. Nutsedge and bermudagrass control was 81 and 82%, respectively, and was more effective than conventional chemical (in the row) + mechanical (between rows) control. Glyphosate at 2% for nutsedge and 1% for bermudagrass...

Optimal plot size for experiments with black oats and the common vetch Ciência Rural
Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Souza,Jéssica Maronez de; Pezzini,Rafael Vieira; Neu,Ismael Mario Marcio; Silveira,Daniela Lixinski; Procedi,Andréia.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the optimal plot size for evaluating the fresh weight of black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) and the common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) in scenarios comprising combinations of the number of treatments, number of replications and levels of precision. Fifteen uniformity trials were conducted with single-crop and intercropped black oats and vetch. Fresh weight was evaluated in 540 basic experimental units (BEU), each of 1 m × 1 m (36 BEU per trial). The Smith index of soil heterogeneity (1938) was estimated. Plot size was determined using the HATHEWAY method (1961), in scenarios comprising combinations of i treatments (i = 5, 10, 15 and 20), r replications (r = 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) and d levels of precision (d = 2%,...

Plant residues: short term effect on sulphate, borate, zinc and copper adsorption by an acid oxisol BABT
Dias,Ana Cristi Basile; Pavan,Marcos Antonio; Miyazawa,Mário; Zocoler,Décio Carlos.
Laboratory experiments were carried out to examine the effects of plant residues on Cu, Zn, B and S adsorption by an acidic oxisol. The plant residues were: black oats (Avena strigosa), oil seed radish(Raphanus sativus), velvet beans (Stizolobium cinereum), and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) collected at flowering stage. Plant residues increased Cu and Zn adsorptions and decreased B and S adsorptions. The results indicated that for short term effect plant residues decreased the availabilities of Cu and Zn through metal organic complex reactions and increased availabilities of S and B through competition with organic anions by the adsorption sites on soil.

Trial cultivation of Chinese artichoke (Stachys sieboldii Miq.) in Tokachi region OAK
秋本, 正博; 市川, 直子; AKIMOTO, Masahiro; ICHIKAWA, Naoko.
